Work
Needless to say, we're very fortunate that we have both been able to make arrangements with our employers to take two months off (and at the same time, too!). The last few weeks have been stressful as we both try to wrap up work before leaving and make sure others are trained and ready to cover our duties. Even so, I'll be working remotely on a limited basis to keep up with what's going on back at the office.
Finances
Maybe you get eight weeks of paid vacation per year, but we don't! As a contractor, I don't accrue any vacation. Sharon has saved up several weeks of vacation time but will still need to go on an unpaid leave for part of her absence. So, as you can imagine, we've had to build up some savings that we'll be dipping into over the summer to pay for fuel and other trip expenses.
The House
We've enlisted friends and family to help with picking up mail and mowing our lawn. We backed up computer files, applied bug repellent, and cleaned out trash to avoid unpleasant surprises and odors when we return. We also applied weed killer and set up timers to keep the house looking occupied.
The Truck
A few days ago Sharon took the truck for a complete check-up. I've also cleaned it out and loaded it with emergency supplies, including road flares, a CB radio, an updated GPS navigation system, and spare gas can and vehicle fluids. I also installed a trailer sway control system.
The Dog
Kira, the dog, is going to be riding this one out at home. The camper is too tight and the truth is that she would limit our possible range of destinations and activities considerably. But I don't think she'll complain - Sharon's mom will take care of her. In fact, they set up an exclusive area for her on Sharon's parents' balcony. In terms of accommodations, it'll actually be an upgrade for her compared to what she's used to.
Internet
Sharon and I plan to take turns updating this blog during the trip. To do so, I've set my phone up to serve as a wireless hotspot. That will also allow me to work remotely and continue planning aspects of our trip as it evolves.
That's just a piece of the forethought and planning that has gone into this venture. But the truth is that it's been both enjoyable and exciting getting everything ready.
