Day 26: Kootenai (Montana, Idaho, Washington)

We're more than half way into our trip but haven't reached the West Coast yet, so today was another driving day to catch up a little. We left the Glacier area and headed West across the Idaho panhandle, a very narrow part of the state that borders Canada between Montana and Washington.

There were few highlights today, but we did stop for a nap along the "Kootenai" river in Idaho at a particularly famous spot that features both the Kootenai "Falls" and a swinging rope suspension bridge. There's a pull-off right by the highway where you can park, and then a path leads you through the woods to a metal bridge over a pair of railroad tracks.

The Kootenai River

After going up and back down this bridge to the actual river, the path splits - left to go to the bridge, right to see the falls. I explored both - first left to the bridge, which looks like it belongs in an Indiana Jones movie. It's held up with rope and planks of wood, and a sign warns that no more than five people should stand on it at a time.

I went to the other side and then went back to look at the fallsl. The river was nice - that same clear blue.

From there we eventually arrived at Coeur D'Alene, the largest city in Northern Idaho, situated by a large lake, and apparently an up and coming place since it has expensive golf and lake resorts. In fact, they have a course with the world's only floating golf green:

The floating green. (not my picture)

We didn't really stay here long as we wanted to get to Washington before calling it a night. After crossing the border we soon arrived in Spokane, and ended up at the nearby Riverside State Park for the night.

Tomorrow we'll continue our drive West and by tomorrow night we hope to be near North Cascades National Park.
