Afterwards, we drove the RV onto the beach to get some water in a pitcher (for use at the dump station later).
After going to the dump station, which was quite horrifying with flies buzzing everywhere and puddles of questionable liquid pooling all around, we began the drive to northwest Nebraska, to the Agate Falls National Monument. Though it was a bit out of the way, I'm very interested in archaeology and dinosaurs, so thought it would be worth the drive.
There was a really nice visitor's center and a few exhibits about the extinct animals that once roamed this area.
We took a quick walk down to the river and found a teepee exhibit so we checked that out as well.
After looking at all of the features the monument had to offer, we departed, heading for South Dakota. However, shortly after leaving the Monument, we realized we had only 30 miles left on the gas tank....and the closest town was roughly 40 miles away. I tried to drive as 'efficiently' as I could, coasting down any incline we came across. Ultimately, we had to resort to using the spare 2 gallons we kept in a spare gas can.
We then were able to just barely! make it to a small town called Crawford in the northwest corner of the state where we fueled up. We then continued driving, across the border, into South Dakota. We entered the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and saw a lot of Native Americans everywhere, particularly in a town called Whiteclay. There was a pack of horses crossing the road here.
Finally we came to the Badlands area. It was impressive to see a giant wall of peaks beginning to rise up from the flat ground.
We entered the national park and found an electric campsite. We are looking forward to exploring more tomorrow.
Random Fact: In Nebraska, mid-grade gasoline is cheaper than regular! Apparently it has something to do with ethanol subsidies.
